The Saratoga Springs War Memorial

Congress Park, Saratoga Springs, NY

The Saratoga Springs War Memorial was dedicated in Congress Park on Flag Day June 14, 1931 replacing a bandstand that was located there.  The inspiration and the drive to raise the funds to build the War Memorial was through efforts of  The American Legion Auxiliary to Adirondack Post 70 chaired by Miss Evelyn M. Barrett from 1928 to 1930.

The Architect was LaFarge, Clark and Creighton of New York.  The War Memorial has eight Doric Columns.  There are seven stones placed between the columns.  The central stone which faces the steps forming the entrance way to the pavilion is slightly larger then the others contains the names of Saratogians who died in service or were killed in action during World War I.  The six other stones contain the names of the Saratogians who served in World War I.

In 1980 The American Legion Adirondack Post 70, Gurtler Brothers Post 420 Veterans of Foreign Wars and Dominick Smaldone Italian American Post 35 worked together to add three more plaques to the War Memorial.  These plaques are dedicated to those who served their country in World War II, The Korean Conflict and the Viet Nam Era.

The Saratoga Springs War Memorial is still used a bandstand and platform for ceremonies held in Congress Park.
